Number five is done!

The Sea Monster's Complaint

This piece brings both happy and sad feelings for me. Happy because I had so much fun working out this type style and, well, these are just a ton of fun to do! I mean really, who gets to work with this quality of illustration for fun? That brings me to the sad part of this project … I had to knock back part of the illustration to get all of the text to fit and be legible. Lacy’s illustrations are art by themselves and covering them up seems sad. That said, I am very happy with how it turned out as the text and illustration seem to co-exist better than any of the previous four.

Sally the Camel

Number four of Lacy’s illustration/poem pieces posted on her blog.

Sally the Camel

Ah. I finished it. I will be completely honest, after two paragraphs into repeating “S”s and “C”s I was doubting whether I wanted to go through with this one. My determination to complete the whole series won out, and I am glad it did. This illustration is my favorite of the four and the poem [in spite of its repetition and length] is fun as well. It seems kind of crazy that it took two full sheets of paper to get this.

And … I have received the illustrator’s permission to add a fifth to the series!

The third of Lacy’s illustration/poem pieces posted on her blog.

The Purple Cow

This one was a bit of a struggle for me. I went through a couple of different styles trying to get that whimsical, straight-forward attitude the poem conveys.

On to the lo-ng Sally!

This piece was one of the first I wanted to do just because it is such a fun poem. When you couple that with Lacy’s spot-on illustration, who wouldn’t want to do this piece?

Mr Moon

The ever talented Lacy Snarr has kindly given me permission to do a bit of hand-drawn typography with four of her illustration/poem pieces posted on her blog. This is the first of four.

Mr Moon

I absolutely love the elegance and peace of this illustration and tried to imitate that feel with the text and layout. Such a joy to do! The end-goal for this series is four pieces worthy of a portfolio slot. We’ll see!

The scene below broke out just as I started to work this morning. It was gone before I really had my fill, but I was able to capture a few images.

Lesson learned today: It is better to capture the scene and let the light reveal itself than try to capture light beams.

I received a very encouraging email from my brother-in-law yesterday regarding some of the older work I have posted about here; below is a celebration of that encouragement.

BoG Letterhead

One of the challenges of designing for a corporate environment is Microsoft Office. In my observations, corporations tend to heavily use Word and Excel. I have avoided this in the past by leaving those kinds of forms alone and sticking to static forms that could be created as a pdf. Then I saw this:

Old Letterhead

Most of the time I am pretty cool with whatever people come up with for themselves, but this letterhead is used for a large amount of customer communcation. Eeep! Jumping into this project I discovered two things: 1, the letterhead needed to include all three locations and 2, it needed to be a Word document. Surprisingly #2 did not turn out to be that big of an issue. I just created and laid out the letterhead in Illustrator, then saved the content as an image and tweaked the margins in Word to match. The thought of getting all three locations in freaked me out. The information included in those three columns is not insignificant and how do you make that look good?! Well, start on it and trust your instincts. I was quite happy with how the letterhead turned out.

New Letterhead

Now if I can just get people to use it.
